Jakarta. With Christmas Eve this year coinciding with the Prophet Muhammad's birthday, police in Jakarta plan to deploy 8,000 officers to manage the influx of traffic and prevent potential cases of terrorism and clashes.
Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Tito Karnavian said the officers would be deployed on Thursday morning and assigned to different mosques and churches across the Greater Jakarta area.
“Security will be focused on churches and mosques that are close to one another,” Tito said on Monday.
“There are nine locations that we are keeping a close eye on for Christmas. Most of the locations are on the outskirts of Jakarta, namely in Tangerang and Bekasi. Inside Jakarta itself there are two [locations]. Hopefully [the threats] are not significant.”
He declined to divulge the locations or the security conditions there.
Police also plan to deploy 18,000 officers for New Year's Eve celebrations, or half of the city police's total personnel. Tito said police expected more people out to celebrate New Year's Eve than in previous years, which would pose major traffic and security challenges.
“For New Year's Eve half of the force is deployed, so around 18,000 members. Not to mention officers from the public order agency and the military. So in total there will be more than 20,000 officers [on the night],” he said.
Last week, the National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Agus Rianto said they will run operation Candle from Dec. 24 until Jan. 2, involving more than 150,000 security personnel across Indonesia.
