In the wake of the recent multitude of terrorist attacks, including the Paris attacks that claimed 130 lives, the United States military has made a major move in the effort toward eliminating the terrorist organization ISIS.
It’s been reported that the U.S. military will be sending some of their most elite soldiers to fight ISIS, the same soldiers responsible for the death of Osama bin Laden.
On Tuesday, December 1st, Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced that a special operations task for would be sent to Iraq to vanquish the terror group.
The task force, which will be about 200 strong and will fall under the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), will be deployed with the purpose of completing targeted raids against key members of terrorist organizations on both side of the Iraqi-Syrian border.
The announcement comes as U.S. defense and intelligence officials were reportedly warned that the ISIS network is rapidly expanding.
The JSOC was established early into the Iraq war, and has a reputation as being both highly secretive and highly effective when it comes to combatting terrorists. They are reported to have killed thousands of insurgents between 2003 and 2008 and are credited with dismantling al-Qaeda’s leadership.
The JSOC is thought by many to be the perfect force to take on ISIS, as they have a long history of successfully completing top-secret missions. Many of the missions involved entering enemy territory where other forces had been unable to penetrate, in order to take out their targets.
The JSOC is also credited with overseeing SEAL Team 6, the mission which was responsible for neutralizing Osama bin Laden, as well as the mission which killed Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.
