KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 12 ― The police have no choice but to beef up efforts to monitor social media as many Internet users in the country abuse the platform by issuing insensitive comments, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said today.
According to the national police chief, some Malaysians even tend to be “overzealous” when using sites like Facebook, often causing public disruption.
“There are 14 million Facebookers in Malaysia and we are considered the worst in making comments and all. This shows that there is a low maturity among our people in handling social media,” he told reporters at a press conference in Bukit Aman today.
Khalid added that threats on social media, especially false messages touching on racial and religious sensitivities, if left unattended, could affect public order.
The police chief also revealed that social media monitoring would include messaging application WhatsApp, which is a popularly used tool to spread messages.
“We will be working together with MCMC to monitor and enforce. It's their duty to investigate and take the guilty ones to court,” Khalid said referring to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.
