Police: Angie Tiong's kidnapping case a misunderstanding

JOHOR BARU: The case of two-year-old Angie Tiong, whose whereabouts have been unknown since last month, was a misunderstanding, according to Johor police.

Johor police chief Datuk Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said the toddler has been surrendered by a couple, who are Malaysians but are Permanent Residents of Singapore, on Sunday night.

Wan Ahmad Najmuddin told reporters at the state police headquarters here today that Tiong is safe and is currently under the care of the Johor Baru Welfare office while police continued the probe.

"Preliminary investigations revealed that the father was unable to take care of the child, so a good Samaritan offered to help.

"When the matter caught media attention, the couple, where the husband is a businessman, came forward and handed Angie over to police," he said.

Wan Ahmad Najmuddin said the child's father, who was picked up for questioning by Johor police, has been released.

When asked to elaborate, Wan Ahmad Najmuddin said the matter was still pending investigations.

"The toddler was just handed over to us last night," he said, adding that more will be revealed when investigations is complete.

The case of the toddler also captured the attention of Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Senator Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun who had called on the Johor Baru Welfare Office to carry out a probe on the matter.

Tiong was reported missing on Dec 10, a month after her father last saw her at a budget hotel in Taman Pelangi.

Police arrested three suspects in relation to the case, which was being investigated under Section 48 of the Child Act for unlawful transfer of possession, custody or control of a child, under Part 8 of the act related to trafficking and abduction of children.
