David Beckham surprises Asea Para Games athletes at Marina Bay Sands

Most spectators who went to the Marina Bay Sands indoor pitch on Sunday (6 Dec) were there to watch Singapore take on Thailand in a five-a-side football match as part of the 8th Asean Para Games. What they didn’t realise was that global football superstar David Beckham was also in attendance.

Beckham, a Marina Bay Sands ambassador, entered the venue quietly and observed the match that took place on the third day of competition of the 8th Asean Para Games. He was smartly dressed in a black suit, with a white shirt and black tie.

He and his entourage left at halftime, but Beckham posted a video of the match on his Instagram with the caption, "The level of skill in this game is incredible."
Before the match, Beckham also spent time interacting with athletes at Marina Bay Sands. Among those he met were cerebral palsy football captain Khairul Anwar, who was dubbed Singapore’s own David Beckham after he scored a hat trick in a loss to Myanmar on Saturday. Beckham said in a statement, “It is inspiring to see athletes pursue their passion with such great desire. There is no bigger honour than having the opportunity to represent your country. The sporting spirit is very much alive at the Games Village and I am privileged to have the chance to meet these incredible people.”

When the photo was posted on Yahoo Singapore's Facebook page, user Darren Alexes commented, "How on earth does a person always have such great hair?!" Another, user Wei Kang, said, "Must be sweating in the suit."

One spectator at the match, who did not want to be named, said, "I recognised him when he came in. Wasn't really surprised as I knew he was in town. I guess he came here because it's a soccer match." The Singapore players were unaware that Beckham was watching the game.

Singapore lost to Thailand 5-0.
