President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo is set to discuss dwelling time and transportation with his ministers in a limited Cabinet meeting on Tuesday in an effort to improve infrastructure.
“The meeting will start at 4 p.m. to discuss dwelling times at main ports and the railway development,” Ari Dwipayana, a palace communication team member, said in a text message sent to journalists on Tuesday.
The two issues are the main tops Jokowi will address in relation to the sea highway and public transportation system he promoted during his presidential campaign last year.
The government has slashed the number of inspections previously conducted at the port, resulting in dwelling time at Tanjung Priok Port in North Jakarta, the country’s main port, being reduced to 4.5 days from 5.5 days.
Jokowi called for the establishment of a task force to cooperate with relevant parties to reduce dwelling time to four days. The dwelling time at Tanjung Priok Port, which handles 70 percent of all goods entering the country, could reach eight days some years ago, delaying shipments and resulting in added costs.
Meanwhile, the government plans to increase commuter train trips from 884 to 988 per day by the end of the year to accommodate a rise in train passengers from the current 850,000 people per day to 1.2 million people. (dan)
